Colette Marcella Schettler (Grote) 1908-2007

Colette Grote died Monday, May 21, at Carroll Health Center Nursing Home in Carroll at the age of 99.  Colette was born on March 31, 1908, at Breda, Iowa, the daughter of Bernard and Emma (Hoebing) Schettler. She attended St. Bernard School in Breda. Colette and Herman W. Grote were married August 23, 1927, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Breda. The couple farmed two miles west of Mount Carmel their entire married life. Colette helped on the farm and raised her family. Her beloved Herman died in January 1976, and Colette moved to Carroll Health Center in 1992. She was a member of Our Lady of Mt Carmel Parish and Altar Society, Breda American Legion Auxiliary and National Catholic Order of Foresters, and was a 4-H Leader for many years. Colette dearly loved her family, especially the little children and enjoyed making candles, cooking, baking and gardening.

She is survived by her children: Paul (Irma) Grote, Norbert Grote, Leonard (Joyce) Grote, Jack (Doreen) Grote, Lorraine (Lyle) Vonnahme, Jeanne (John) Rosener, Jim (Mary Ann) Grote, Mary (Leonard) Sailer, Bill (Nancy) Grote, Alice (John) Hamilton, Judy (Duane) Olberding and Ted (Peggy) Grote; 55 grandchildren; 110 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren, numersous step great and great great grandchildren; brother, Ray (Rita) Schettler; and sisters: Sister Lucille Schettler, and Rita (Fred) Lorenz. She was also preceded in death by her parents; son, Ralph Grote; 7 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; daughters-in-law: Luella Grote and Marlita Grote; brothers: Eugene, Leonard, Cyril, Joe and Vincent Schettler; and sisters: Marcella Gross, Sister Karen Schettler, Cecelia Schettler, Leona Schettler and Georgia Schettler.

MOUNT CARMEL— Mass of the Christian burial for Colette Grote of Mount Carmel will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 25, 2007, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Mount Carmel.

Mrs. Grote, 99, died Monday, May 21, at Carroll Health Center.

The Rev. James McAlpin will preside at the Mass. Lectors will be Greg Rosener and Mike Vonnahme. Gift bearers will be Patty Gehling and Karen Sadwith. Eucharistic ministers will be Sandy Grote and Duane Olberding.

Casket bearers will be Rick Grote, Mike Grote, David Grote, Larry Grote, Tom Grote, Aaron Grote, Patrick Aaron Grote, Heath Grote and Jeff Grote. The Breda American Legion Auxiliary will have an honor guard.

Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery at Breda.

Visitation starts at 2:30 and the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Altar Society will lead a rosary at 3 Thursday afternoon at Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish will hold a Christian wake service at 8 Thursday night at the funeral home.

A daughter of Bernard and Emma (Hoebing) Schettler, she was born March 31, 1908, at Breda, attended St. Bernard School there and spent her younger years in the community.

She and Herman W. Grote were married Aug. 23, 1927, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Breda.

The Grotes farmed two miles west of Mount Carmel. Mrs. Grote was a homemaker and helped on the farm. She moved to Carroll Health Center in 1992.

She was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish and Altar Society, Breda American Legion Auxiliary and National Catholic Order of Foresters, and she was a 4-H Leader for many years. She enjoyed making candles, cooking, baking and gardening.

Survivors include 12 children: Paul Grote and wife Irma of Carroll, Norbert Grote of Glidden, Leonard Grote and wife Joyce of Minooka, Ill., Jack Grote and wife Doreen of Carroll, Lorraine Vonnahme and husband Lyle of Carroll, Jeanne Rosener and husband John of Newcastle, Neb., Jim Grote and wife Mary Ann of Cave Creek, Ariz., Mary Sailer and husband Leonard of Manning, Bill Grote and wife Nancy of Withee, Wis., Alice Hamilton and husband John of Jefferson, Judy Olberding and husband Duane of Iowa Falls and Ted Grote and wife Peggy of Gibson City, Ill.; 55 grandchildren; 110 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; a brother, Ray Schettler, and his wife, Rita, of Breda; and two sisters: Sister Lucille Schettler FSPA of La Crosse, Wis., and Rita Lorenz and husband Fred of Omaha, Neb.

Mrs. Grote was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herman, in January 1976; a son, Ralph Grote; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; two daughters-in-law: Luella Grote and Marlita Grote; five brothers: Eugene, Leonard, Cyril, Joe and Vincent Schettler; and five sisters: Marcella Gross, Sister Karen Schettler FSPA, Cecelia Schettler, Leona Schettler and Georgia Schettler.
